The Climate Survey

In May of 2022, all district employees were given an online "Climate Survey" to gauge the attitudes of the employees towards the district. In January of 2023, the board finally brought the survey results to a work session and promptly dismissed the entire document. After Jeff Bollin, BOE president, said the board should "own it and grow from it," Pete Robinson said the survey has "zero value." Robinson claimed he heard the survey could be taken more than once, making the results unreliable. In reality, a previous survey had been sent in a format that allowed multiple submissions, but this particular survey was sent through Survey Monkey and allowed only one response per person.

Below is an analysis of the survey. We have attached files related to the content of this post, as well as a .pdf of the actual survey questions (which were obtained through a Kansas Open Records Act (KORA) request) related to our Superintendent and the BOE. The board may dismiss the survey, but we encourage you to take a look and decide if this board is doing all it can to fulfill its goal of recruiting and retaining quality educators.

ANALYSIS OF SURVEY:

Two major topics of note. There are 20 survey questions that I have seen (there may be more, but I haven’t received those in any document). First, when we look at the 20 survey questions, here is what we find from the document titled, “USD469 Climate Survey 2022 (basic quantification)”: Numerical summary: · 90 Negative Comments (highlighted in red) · 21 Neutral Comments or No Comment (highlighted in yellow) · 4 Positive Comments (highlighted in green) The results quantified: · 78% Negative Comments · 18% Neutral Comments or No Comment · 4% Positive Comments Topics that were addressed in the survey: · 17 topics that were largely, positively received from our District’s educational staff o Our Lansing USD469 Business Office is prompt and friendly with requests o Our Lansing USD469 Custodial and Maintenance Department is prompt and friendly with requests o Our Lansing USD469 Technology Department is prompt and friendly with requests o Our Lansing USD469 Emergency Preparedness Department is prompt and friendly with requests o Our Lansing USD469 Transportation Department is prompt and friendly with requests o I know what is expected of me o I am motivated to contribute more than what is expected of me o In the last month, I have received feedback from my supervisor o Leadership in my building or department recognizes staff for a job well-done o Leadership in my building or department follows through on commitments o Leadership in my building or department involves staff in decision making and problem solving o Leadership in my building or department backs me up when I need it o Leadership or department is aware of what goes on in the classrooms o Leadership in my building or department effectively handles student discipline and behavioral problems o I feel Superintendent Dan Wessel is transparent in his decision-making for Lansing USD469 o I feel Superintendent Dan Wessel communicates frequently and effectively to staff o Superintendent Dan Wessel is an effective leader for Lansing USD469 · 3 topics that were largely, negatively received from our District’s educational staff o My BOE’s vision and goals align with what is best for our students’ chances of success o I feel the BOE has the best interests of students in mind when making decisions o I feel the BOE has the best interest of teachers on mind when making decisions

Next, when we focus specifically on the BOE, here is what we find. There is a difference in the total number value between the questions noted above and the list that follows below. That is because the above list identified common topics in the survey, and the below list isolates specific issues, specific to the BOE. Some responses below address multiple issues in one statement. The attachment addressed is titled, “USD469 Climate Survey 2022 (detailed quantification): Numerical Summary: · 54 comments that state the BOE has an agenda that is political, personal, divisive, or otherwise against the USD469 educational staff (highlighted in purple) · 29 comments that state the BOE is fearful of diversity, is disconnected from the ongoings in the district, or against education in general (highlighted in light blue) · 9 comments that state the BOE is specifically creating a hostile environment (highlighted in red) · 20 neutral comments, or no comment (highlighted in yellow) · 7 positive comments (highlighted in green) The results quantified: · 45% comments that state the BOE has an agenda that is political, personal, divisive, or otherwise against the USD469 educational staff (highlighted in purple) · 24% comments that state the BOE is fearful of diversity, is disconnected from the ongoings in the district, or against education in general (highlighted in light blue) · 8% comments that state the BOE is specifically creating a hostile environment (highlighted in red) · 17% neutral comments, or no comment (highlighted in yellow) · 6% positive comments (highlighted in green)
